Coming back to India Vs West Indies first ODI match highlights, the India-West Indies ODI series kicked off with a bang with both the sides playing out a whirlwind of a first match on Sunday. Chasing West Indies’ mammoth 322, Virat Koli and Rohit Sharma were at their enigmatic best. The duo put on a 246 run partnership to destroy the West Indian bowling line-up and take their side to a comfortable 8 wicket victory on the day.
Stepping out to bat first, West Indies were quick to put behind their batting failures of the test series. Lead by Kieron Powell and Shai Hope who gave the visitors the perfect platform, West Indies barged their way past the 300 run mark with ease.
A 39 ball 51 by Powell at the top of the order set back India’s blowers, allowing Shimron Hetmyer to come in and free his arms. Fearing no one, the youngster was in terrific form on the day, single handily guiding his side. 6 fours and 6 sixes in an innings of 106 off just 78 balls spared no Indian bowler. Belligerent hitting by him scorched India and looked to be taking the match away from the hosts before Ravindra Jadeja got the all-important wicket. Looking to go for another big one, Hetmyer failed to get enough off the off-spinners delivery, hitting one right into Rishabh Pant’s hands.
The wicket came at a stage for India where West Indies were in complete control. With the rest of the West Indian batting line-up failing to apply themselves in the middle and play out an innings till the end, India recovered well to put some brakes on their innings. Small cameos by the tail-enders were enough for the Caribbean side to register a total that they had failed to reach in even one test inning.
Put on the back foot in their attempt to chase down a tricky total with the early dismissal of Shikhar Dhawan for just 4 runs, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma ensured that West Indies’ joy was short-lived. The two blistered past the visitors, setting off fireworks in the first ODI.
The two were at their clinical best, routing the West Indies bowling unit of Roach, Thomas and Holder. A treat to the eyes, the pair played out beautiful innings, showcasing pure, clean hitting. Putting on a stand of 246, the Virat-Rohit combination showed that no total is too big in front of them when they are on song.
The match played into India’s hands, turning so one-sided at one point, that an over with a boundary became a rarity. Notching up 147 to become the first player this year to score 2000 runs, man of the match Kohli was at his swashbuckling best. And not to be left behind was Rohit, scoring an impressive unbeaten 150, becoming the aggressor after reaching his half-century.
Virat Kohli: This feels very good and it was a very convincing win for us. But the Windies did put up a good total. Something like 320 can always get tricky when you are chasing, and we knew that big partnerships are what we needed. Well in the top order I mostly take the anchor role because both Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are very good stroke-makers.
