Coming back to India Vs West Indies Fourth ODI, brimming with confidence on the back of a comprehensive victory in the third ODI against India, West Indies will go into the fourth match of the series on Monday with the knowledge that this Indian side isn’t invincible at home. The going won’t be easy for them though with a hurt Indian unit looking to bounce back and take a vital lead in the series.
India’s performance in the third ODI was a dismal one, which saw a massive middle-order batting collapse from them. Chasing a par 287, India’s batting unit collapsed like a house of sticks caught in a tornado. Apart from Kohli, the rest of the Indian batting line-up failed to cross the 25 run mark, folding for 240 in 48 overs to help the West Indies back into the series.
A performance that left us all disappointed as Indian supporters especially given the manner it came about in has arisen plenty of questions going into Monday’s match. Questions that need answering come today if the side is to take an unassailable lead today.
The biggest area of concern, something that has been troubling the side for quite some time now is their inability to close out matches. Squandering healthy positions in far too many matches now, the Indian team was guilty of the same in the third one-dayer. With West Indies on the mat at 120-5, India failed to wrap up their innings, allowing them to get to 283 from there. Going into the fourth ODI, India need to be more ruthless in their approach and finish off their opponents when given the chance.
The batting department failing on home conditions that offer sluggish and batting friendly tracks is hard to digest for us. The over dependency on the openers and Virat Kohli has stretched for too long now. India’s middle-order looks frail and weak, underperforming consistently and letting the team down far too often.
With Kohli being in blistering hot form, becoming the first Indian to score three consecutive ODI hundreds, the team should be looking to build an innings around him and propel themselves to a massive total. Ravindra Jadeja should see a return to the side to bolster the lower middle-order and give some much-needed impetus to the Indian side.
For West Indies, the fourth ODI offers an opportunity to do something which even the best of their country’s sides couldn’t. The script will remain the same for them after a successful outing last time. Hetmyer and Hope have been in fine nick and with their bowlers finally stepping up last time around, they’ll be looking to back their abilities come Monday.
