The India Vs West Indies Team India’s Confirmed XII is all set to return to action from tomorrow when they take on West Indies in the first of two test matches the countries will play. The Indian side is once again back in the comfort of home conditions and will be looking to put in a performance that is worthy of a world no.1 side come the 6th of October.
Romping to the Asia Cup last month, a clinical Indian unit helped us forget the debacle in England to some extent. However, the way the Indian team was humbled in foreign conditions in the test series is something we as Indian cricket lovers still have yet to erase from our mind. Come the test series against West Indies, the Indian side has the perfect opportunity to announce its status as one of the best test sides in the world.
The first series ahead of a month-long tour that sees the two countries play ODIs and T20s as well will see India host West Indies in Rajkot tomorrow starting 9:30 am IST. And in a surprise move, the BCCI broke away from usual tradition to announce the 12 men Indian squad for the upcoming test.
While Mayank Aggarwal and Hanuma Vihari miss out, Prithvi Shaw has been handed a Test debut by the selectors to become the 293rd player to wear the Indian test cap. The opener has scored 1,418 runs in 14 First-Class matches and has seven centuries and five fifties to his name with a high score of 188 runs against West Indies for India A.
Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane said, “I’m definitely happy for him. I’ve been following him since his young days for Mumbai, we practiced together. He’s an attacking opening batsman. He’s been doing so well for Mumbai, India A on a consistent basis, so that’s the reward he got. I’m sure he’ll do well,” Rahane said.
The 12 man squad also includes Mohammed Siraj who could be included in the playing 11 come matchday. The decision will come down to the pitch ground conditions which will help the team management decide whether to go in with three spinners- Jadeja, Yadav, and Ashwin or three pacers-Shami, Yadav and Siraj.
India 12-man squad for 1st Test: Virat Kohli (c), KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw (debut), Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur.
