Indian Women Cricket Team News – What should have been an eventful year for the star women cricketers of Team India turned out to be rather barren. The coronavirus pandemic has halted all plans of the cricketing calendar in India, perhaps affecting the Women’s Cricket team in the most adverse manner. Team India had managed to go on to the finals of the T20 World Cup in March this year, and the rest of the year promised much action.indian women cricket team news

The four-team Women’s T20 Challenge was scheduled for later this year. An ODI tour of England was also scheduled in order to make the Women’s Team accustomed to the challenges that lay ahead of them in the next year’s World Cup tournament. The Women’s T20 Challenge might not be held at all this year as the rescheduling of the IPL in UAE and the clash with the Women’s Big Bash League has left very little free time in the calendar for practical scheduling of the tournament. The IPL is scheduled between September 19 to November 8 while the Women’s Big Bash League is to be held between October 17 and November 29.

An additional challenge that is looming regarding the T20 challenge is the unavailability of some star Indian players who would be inbound for the Big Bash League. The availability of foreign players for the T20 Challenge is also a matter of discussion now.

The absence of any selection panel for the Women’s Cricket Team in India since early January this year is also a matter of concern. The earlier panel of 5 members led by Hemlata Kala finished its term on January 22, after the final of the quadrangular series featuring India A, India B, Thailand and Bangladesh in Patna. The BCCI had then invited applicants for the formation of a new panel but no decision has been taken in that regard ever since. BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that the appointment of the new panel would be done in due course of time. The coronavirus pandemic has created several restrictions in the path of appointment protocols, so that would take some time.

Another event this year would have been the ODI tour of England proposed by ECB. But the proposal which was originally scheduled for July-August this year was turned down due to the growing cases of Covid-19 in India. The bilateral series was supposed to be turned into a tri-series including Team South Africa but BCCI opted to pull out of the event. The Women’s Cricket Team who haven’t played an international match since March this year last played an ODI in November last year. Their lack of practice will surely affect their chances for the next year’s World Cup in New Zealand scheduled in Feb-March.
