Indian Women Hockey team wins FIH – The Indian women’s hockey team defeated Chile 4-2 in the semi-final to meet Japan in the final on Sunday. Reaching the final round of the tournament helped Indian team in securing their place in the final round of 2020 Olympics qualifiers. The final match took place in Hiroshima Hockey Stadium and our team rose to the occasion and defeated Japan in their home ground with a score of 3-1.
A sensational start by the ladies in blue saw them take a lead only in the 3rd minute as Rani Rampal scored in her team’s first penalty corner. Rani is the captain of the team and her well-hit shot beat the Japanese goalkeeper Akio Tanaka. India really had a dream start as they won another penalty corner in the 9th minute but because of lack execution, they gave a foul.

Japan were totally out of the game for the first 15 minutes as they could manage only 2 circle entries at that time. But in their second entry during the final minutes of the first quarter, a shot made by Yuri Nagai on the baseline got deflected by Kanon Mori and entered the net. The deflection made it very difficult for the Indian Goalkeeper Savita who could not react in time.
With scores level, it was drag-flicker Gurjit who struck the ball into the top left corner of the Japanese goal to give India the lead once again in the 45th minute making the score 2-1. India after securing lead focussed on maintaining possession and didn’t make many errors. Japan also tried to get back in the game as they won Penalty Corners but India successfully managed to defend it and keep the lead.
Japan tried a risky substitution as they removed their goalkeeper for an extra outfield player which initially helped them gain some form and momentum but also made their defence weak on which Indian team capitalized and Gurjit scored her second goal of the match to extend the lead by 2 goals.
Indian team’s captain Rani was adjudged the “Player of the tournament” while Gurjit was the top-scorer of FIH Series. The eventual triumph in the tournament was lauded by many, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi who called it an ‘exceptional outcome.’
