India’s ICC Cricket World Cup Squad: Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayadu’s absence discussed

With the much-awaited India’s ICC Cricket World Cup Squad being announced by the governing council, the side has thrown up a hugely contentious issue with both Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu missing out to Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar respectively. It has thrown up a huge argument whether these two spots were picked up correctly with the cricket frenzy in the country seeing supporters from both the bases raising prevalent points in support of their favorite players.

We analyse the reason for the BCCI’s selection, taking a look at the reasons that played a factor in giving Dinesh Karthik the nod as the backup wicket-keeper and deciding to go ahead with Shankar in place of Rayadu for the all-important number 4 spot.

Reason for leaving Rishabh Pant out of the main side

The BCCI clarified that performances in the ongoing IPL were not considered by the selectors. This meant that Pant’s 245 runs in eight games didn’t count for much as compared to Karthik’s 111 runs in the same number of matches with wicket-keeping abilities playing a major role in who’ll be named as the backup wicket-keeper.

Dinesh Karthik’s ability to handle pressure and his wicket-keeping skills meant that he has got the nod over Rishabh Pant: BCCI. They further went onto add that Dhoni is the first-choice keeper and Karthik will only play in case of an injury.
“This squad was very close to the side we picked against Australia. We didn’t consider IPL form. The likes of Iyer and Shubman Gill are doing well but they were not considered,” the selection committee said.

Inexperience: 5 ODIs and 15 T20 with no spectacular innings
Lack of maturity: Tendency to throw wicket away after getting a start

Reason for Leaving Ambati Rayudu out of the main side

“After the 2017 Champions Trophy, we tried a lot of middle-order batsmen which included the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey. Vijay offered us three dimensions — he might bowl a bit and is a fantastic fielder. He is a batman who might bowl a bit. We are looking at him for the No. 4 position.

India’s ICC Cricket World Cup Squad – Our View

While Rishabh Pant has sealed down an A level contract recently and also went onto becoming India’s first choice wicket-keeper in the longest format of the game, he’s shown flaws in his batting technique when it comes to ODIs and T20s. While a good hitter of the ball, one who always ups the ante during his innings, always looking at going for the big hits rather than understand the situation and building a foundation of a win for his side.

With the number of games, the ability to come in and finish matches and better wicket-keeping skills, the BCCI gave Karthik the go ahead and it in our opinion is the correct decision. Pant still has a long way to learn and plenty of areas to iron out and 2023 will be a better proposition for him.

Widely expected that Rayudu will make the World Cup squad at number 4, his dwindling form and lapses abilities to play outside India saw him fail to consolidate a berth in the final squad. In Shankar, India get a player who can bowl as well but he’s hardly batted permanently at number 4. According to us, both the players are far from ideal from the number 4 spot, one that has been a huge bone of contention for quite some of India’s failings recently but Shankar does offer more than Rayudu.
