India ended Day 3 of the first test match on 189, giving them a commanding lead of 498 runs. Earlier in the day, Kohli refused to enforce a follow on the Sri Lankan team and decided to bat for a second time in the day, working on a 309 run lead from the first innings.
Starting Day 3 with their backs against the walls, Sri Lanka had their task cut out for them.Despite well-played innings of 92 by Dilruwan Perera , Sri Lanka were not able to hand around for long and it was only a matter of time before they were limited to 291-9 by the Indian bowlers. Ravindra Jadeja led the Indian bowling unit as he picked up 3 wickets to hand India a lead of 309 runs after they had scored 600 in the first innings.
The Sri Lankan team came out in the second innings playing catch up to a superb Indian performance both in the batting and bowling departments. They started strongly by dismissing Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara cheaply. They were unable to capitalize on this as Mukund and Kohli played excellently and put on a 133 run partnership. Mukund (81) was eventually dismissed by Gunathilaka but the Indians still have Kohli (76) in the middle.
India will be looking to bat for one more session on Day 4 and set Sri Lanka a target in excess of 550. India will then have five sessions to bowl Sri Lanka out and take a 1-0 lead.
