- India won by an innings and 53 runs
- Jadeja was the MOTM
- India lead the series 2-0
India put in a herculean performance to crush Sri Lanka in the second test match at Colombo by an innings and 53 runs. Despite a gritty Sri Lankan performance in the second innings, the Indian bowlers came through to dismiss the Lankans for 368 and seal the three match series with successive victories. Ravindra Jadeja was the architect of the Indian win, picking up 5/152 in the second innings and also went on to bag the man of the match award for his performance.
Having batted first in the match, India posted a mammoth 622, courtesy of centuries by Ajinkya Rahane(132) and Cheteshwar Pujara(133).The Sri Lankan batting collapsed once again for a paltry 183 and was enforced a follow-on by captain Virat Kohli.
Smelling blood, the Indian team came out all guns blazing as they looked to dismiss Sri Lanka in the second innings and end the match as soon as possible. The Sri Lankans put in a much better batting performance in their second innings but were unable to make up for their fantastic collapse in the first innings. Lead by opener Karunaratne (141) and Mendis (110), it looked as if the Sri Lankans would overtake the Indians lead and set up a decent total for them to chase. It was, however, a matter of time before Jadeja spun his magic to take Sri Lanka from a dominating position of 310-5 to 386 all out and hand India one of their largest win in history against Sri Lanka by an innings and 53 runs.
Virat Kohli: “The way the wicket behaved and how it was getting worse by the day and the lead of more than 440 prompted us to enforce the follow-on. I haven’t been a big fan of enforcing it, though.
Dinesh Chandimal: “To be honest, you can’t control the toss. We were outplayed with bat and the ball in the first innings. But I was happy with the way we played in the second innings.
India will be looking to continue their red hot form when they face Sri Lanka in the third and final match of the series on August 12 at Pakelle.Expect the same intensity from Kohli’s boys who will be looking for a clean sweep.
