We often hear the government working with organizations like CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM, etc, and wonder what they do. These organizations serve a means of communication between the government and the corporate & business world which may not always have a way to reach out to the government directly.

With advice from the government, these organizations propose relevant changes in business policies, etc. These organizations that are made up of several organizations are called ‘Chamber of Commerce’.

CII – Confederation of Indian Industry

  • Formed in 1895, the Confederation of Indian Industry is a non-government not-for-profit organization/industry association in India which has over 9000 members from both the private and public sectors.
  • It includes SMEs, MNCs, and an indirect membership of over 300000 enterprises from over 265 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.
  • The CII aims to sustain India internationally and to build the organization as the first port of call for foreign delegations that wish to enlist with India.
  • It’s headquarter is situated in New Delhi, with 65 offices including 9 Centres of excellence in India and 11 overseas offices and institutional partnerships with 355 counterpart organizations in 126 countries.

FICCI – Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry – Industry associations of India

  • Established in 1927, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry is an association of business organizations in India.
  • This organization was established on the advice of Mahatma Gandhi by GD Birla and Purshottamdas Thakurdas.
  • Like the CII, the FICCI also is a non-government not-for-profit organization which draws its membership from both the public and private corporate sector.
  • It has an indirect membership of over 250000 companies from different regional chambers of commerce and is involved in sector-specific business building, business promotion, and networking.
  • Its headquarter is situated in New Delhi, with a presence in over 12 states in India and 8 countries across the world.

ASSOCHAM – Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India

  • Formed in 1920, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India is one of the apex trade associations of India.
  • It represents the interests of trade and commerce in India and also acts as an interface between issues and initiatives.
  • Its goal is to promote both, domestic and international trade, and reduce trade barriers while fostering a conducive environment for the growth of the trade and industry of India.
  • Its headquarter is located in New Delhi, with regional offices located in 6 cities, covering membership of over 4.5 lakh companies and professionals in the country.

IETO – Indian Economic Trade Organization – Industry associations of India

  • Formed in 2013, The IETO is a non-profit membership association. It works to promote the economy and trade in India.
  • It was founded by former Minister of State for Defense and Agriculture, S Krisjnakumar IAS and Dr. Asif Iqbal, executive director of the Asian Arab Chamber of Commerce.
  • This organization majorly supports countries to bolster industry support for stronger participation in the multilateral trade negotiations process. It provides consultation services to foreign companies seeking local partners or collaborations for service distribution networks, events, and conferences.
  • Its headquarter is located in Bengaluru.

NASSCOM – National Association of Software and Services Companies

  • Established in 1988, NASSCOM is a non-profit organization/trade association of India IT and BPO Industry.
  • It provides services like business promotion, networking, policy reforms, etc.
  • The organization carries out a number of events annually, targeting startups in the Indian ecosystem so as to nurture them and help them develop into bigger organizations.
