Interesting facts about Lovlina Borgohain – Rising Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain, a two-time World Championships bronze medallist, has become the talk of the town after assuring herself of a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the welterweight category.

Lovlina belongs to the Bara Mukhia village in the Golaghat district of Assam. She was born to a small-scale businessman Tiken and his homemaker wife Mamoni. The Borgohain family faced financial struggles during the earlier years. Even then, her father struggled a lot to support her dreams.

Lovlina has two elder sisters — twins Licha and Lima.

Lovlina and her sisters were initially drawn to kick-boxing. Her siblings went on to compete at the national level in the sport. Later, they decided not to pursue their career in kick-boxing beyond that stage, while Lovlina switched to boxing.

The beginning

The 23-year-old first displayed her boxing skills at Sports Authority of India (SAI) trials at her Barpathar Girls High School, Lovlina’s primary school. It was during the trials that she was noticed by Padum Boro, who started coaching her in 2012. She would later start taking lessons from India’s chief women’s boxing coach Shiv Singh.

First major break

Her career took an upswing when she was selected in the Indian squad for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2018, after an impressive gold medal-winning campaign at the India Open in February 2018. She had also impressed at the Asian Boxing Championships in Vietnam in November 2017 where she won a bronze to add to her bronze at the President’s Cup held in Astana in June 2017.

In the Commonwealth Games, Borgohain, however, lost to eventual champion Sandy Ryan from the United Kingdom in the quarterfinals. But her participation at the CWG 2018 was a breakthrough of sorts.

Meditation does the trick for Lovlina

Lovlina, after losing in the quarter-finals of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, decided that she needed a change in approach as she felt that she had prepared to her best of ability before the event but still could not win a medal.

She realised physical fitness is not enough and turned to meditation.

“I had prepared very well, be it technique or fitness, going into that event. And when I lost, it was mentally draining for me,” she admitted in a chat with Olympic Channel.

“Only after that did I realize that physical prowess was not all that mattered. Playing a big tournament brings with it a lot of stress and I became aware of the psychological aspects of sport.

“I took to meditation to improve my psyche and it also helped me strategize in between bouts. I started performing better after that.”

The results were there to see as she clinched two consecutive World Championships bronze medals (2018 and 2019).

Tokyo qualification

And in early 2020, she sealed her spot in the Olympics by beating Uzbekistan’s Maftunakhon Melieva in the quarterfinals of the Asian Olympic qualifiers.

She fell in the semi-finals to Gu Hong of China and had to settle for another bronze though but her mission was accomplished. Her next aim, however, is to change the hue of the metal.
