  • Armed forces first proposed to build the National War Memorial in 1960, but it could not be constructed for a long time.
  • The construction of this memorial was approved by the Modi government in October 2015.
  • On 1 January 2019, this memorial was completed.
  • Earlier, the British built India Gate in 1931 in memory of Indian martyred who lost their lives in the First World War.

  • Amar Jawan Jyoti was created in honor of 3843 soldiers who died in the 1971 war.
  • The obelisk stands at a height of 15.5 meters and is visible even from a distance as one enters the complex.

The National War Memorial has 4 concentric circles and one central obelisk which burns an ‘eternal flame’ at the bottom that represent the amar jawan. These 4 concentric circles are designed as a Chakravyuh, an ancient Indian war formation.

Amar Chakra
This structure of the memorial represents immortality. It burns continuously under the main obelisk at the center of the monument. The flame represents the immortality of fallen soldiers and the promise that the Nation will never forget their sacrifices.

Veerta Chakra
The second circle symbolises the bravery. This chakra reminds us the bravery of Indian forces in the form of a covered gallery that exhibits six murals crafted in bronze. These murals depict valiant battle actions of IAF.

Tyag Chakra
Tyag Chakra, the circle of sacrifice symbolise the ancient war formation ‘Chakravyuh’. The circular concentric walls of honour are built where an independent granite tablet is dedicated to each soldier who has made the sacrifice in the battlefield. The name of the soldier is etched in golden letters along with the details of Rank.

Rakshak Chakra
The outermost circle, Raksahak chakra is made of rows of trees which represents the protection. The Rakshak Chakra is a reassurance to the citizens of the India about their safety. Each tree represent the soldiers who make sure that the Nation is safe.

  • The obelisk is surrounded by Veerta Chakra with six bronze murals depicting different battle actions. Each mural weighs between 600kg and 1,000kg.
  • The Tyag Chakra made entirely of granite bricks, each consisting of the name of a fallen soldier since India’s Independence.
  • At present, there are 25,942 carved names on the walls and there is scope to add more names, officials said.
  • The National War Memorial consists of over 600 trees that act as a wall and will represent the soldiers who protect the country.
  • There is no entry fee to visit the National War Memorial complex.
