  • Teachers Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna recipient and the First Vice President and second President of independent India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
  • The author of The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 September 1888.
  • He had a master’s degree in philosophy and played a huge role in attracting global attention to Indian philosophy.
  • When Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan became President of India in 1962, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday but Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan insisted them to celebrate his birthday as Teachers’ Day. Since then, India celebrates Teacher’s Day on 5th September.
