Birth, Family and Education
Rani Lakshmibai was born on 19 November 1828 as Manikarnika Tambe to father, Moropant Tambe and mother, Bhagirathi Sapre. When she was four, Lakshmibai’s mother died. Her father worked for Peshwa Baji Rao II. Rani Lakshmibai learned reading and writing at home. She was trained for fencing, shooting, horsemanship, and mallakhamba.
Personal Life
Manikarnika was married to Maharaja of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao Newalkar in May 1852 and later her name was changed to Lakshmibai. In 1851, Lakshmibai gave birth to a boy, Damodar Rao who died just after 4 months. Later, the couple adopted Gangadhar Rao’s cousin, Damodar Rao. In November 1853, after the death of Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, Damodar Rao’s claim to the throne was rejected as he was the adopted son of Maharaja.

On 0 May 1857, the Indian Rebellion started in Meerut. When Rani got to know about this, she increased her protection and conducted a Haldi Kumkum ceremony to convince her people that there is no need to fear about British.

Death
On 17 June, in Kotah-ki-Serai near the Phool Bagh of Gwalior, the British forces killed 5,000 soldiers of Laxmibai. Lakshmibai was unhorsed and was wounded. Some say that she was bleeding on the roadside and one British soldier fired at her. Others say that she was dressed as a cavalry leader and did not want the British forces to capture her body and told hermit to burn it. Rani Lakshmibai died on 18 June 1858.
