Having taken to the game from a young age, Tendulkar got his first glimpse of an international match during the Indian vs Zimbabwe match in the 1987 world cup in which he was a ball boy. He was 14 years old when he visited the Wankhede Stadium during that fortuitous encounter. It took him only two years more, at the age of 16 to play his first match for India in an ODI against Pakistan. It was a debacle of an opening exchange in his career though with him being dismissed for 0 in his first match and taking a massive 79 matches to score his first century.

After failing to make the cut for the Mumbai Cricket Association’s much coveted and revered Best Junior Cricketer award, Tendulkar was presented with Sunil Gavaskar’s own ultra-light pads. He went onto wear the pads of the ravishing and alluring Indian opener in his match against Pakistan.

Fielded for Pakistan in a warm-up match

An incident that has not been talked about much and is a lesser known one, was alluded to by Tendulkar himself. During a one-day exhibition match between India and Pakistan on January 20, 1987, Tendulkar was sent as a substitute fielder for Pakistan, the first time ever he took to the field in a match featuring cricketers from the international arena.

First cricketer to be given out by the third umpire

South Africa vs India in 1992 became the first time ever that innovative technological advancements in the game went one step further with televised replays being made available to the third umpire. On the receiving end of the first ever decision made by the third umpire in cricket was Tendulkar who was adjudged to be run out by Karl Lienberg in the test series in South Africa.

Scoring 673 runs in the 2003 ICC ODI Cricket World Cup, one that saw India go all the way to the finals before slumping at the final hurdle, Tendulkar who was named man of the tournament, refused to play a single ball in the nets in that edition of the resounding tournament. As mentioned by Rahul Dravid, Tendulkar didn’t want to waste his touch in the nets and wanted to save it for the matches.

During the match against Sri Lanka in the same world cup, Tendulkar has talked about batting with tissues in his underwear. During his 97-run innings, he mentions an upset stomach the night before only went onto becoming more unsavoury on the day of the match which lead him to take the precaution during his uncomfortable stay in the middle.
