IPL 2018: KXIP Vs DD Match Review

Another match, another disappointing outing for the Delhi Daredevils. Playing at home did not change the fortunes of the Delhi side who are having a pathetic season so far this IPL. Despite being egged on by thousands of supporters who had flocked out in huge numbers to the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium, Delhi failed to improve on their performance as they slipped to their fifth defeat of the tournament to stay bottom of the rankings.

A capacity crowd in Delhi was in full volume as they came out to watch the first match of their team this IPL. And despite their best efforts to see their team finally win a match, the side failed to justify the trust shown in them. Going in with a couple of changes into their first match on home turf, the Delhi side brought in Amit Mishra for Nadeem as was predicted by us and English fast bowler Liam Plunkett as they looked to strengthen an underperforming bowling unit. The changes worked too for Delhi as their bowlers finally turned up to the big stage in their sixth match of the tournament. A highly impressive performance on a pitch and outfield that had everything in it for the batsmen saw Delhi rattle a Gayle-less Punjab side. Picking up the dangerous KL Rahul early on, Delhi’s bowlers bowled really well throughout the innings as they picked up wickets at regular intervals t ensure that the Punjab batsmen failed to put on a competitive total. Another flawless performance by them in the field was spoiled late on when David Miller was dropped twice, both off easy chances. That seemed to turn the tide in favour of Punjab who ended up getting a few crucial runs in the final overs to reach 143-8.

Expecting this to be a scanter in the park, the Delhi batsmen came out to chase in high spirits. They got off to just the right start with under-19 star Prithvi Shaw making the most of his first start in the IPL. He swung his bat to get a quick-fire 20 to see Delhi reach 40 in the first 5 overs. Unfortunately, that was the only high point of Delhi’s chase with them losing 5 wickets under 100 after that. A late onslaught by Iyer in the final over was too less for Delhi who eventually went onto lose by 4 runs on the night.
