The last time around these two sides had met, CSK without Dhoni had gone onto lose the match. And this time, a Kane Williamson less Sunrisers Hyderabad had to suffer the same fate, going down by 6 wickets against the Chennai Super Kings. Unable to get rid of Shane Watson for the entirety of the match ended up costing SRH with the opener finally coming good for his side with 96 run innings that took his side to a comfortable win in the end.

Having been a horrendous surface to bat on for the batsmen, the Sunrisers Hyderabad looked to be set to face the same travesties as everyone else as Bairstow departed without opening his account. From there on though, it was all SRH with David Warner and Manish Pandey putting on a 115-run stand in 12 overs, one that completely blew past CSK. It was a decisive partnership, one that had absolutely no problems in hitting either the spinners or pacers for runs.

As CSK’s slower bowlers were negated with illustrious ease on a surface that surprisingly played a bit better for the batsmen, picking up just 2 wickets in their 12 overs, it wasn’t until an away off spinner from Harbhajan, one that was too much for Warner to get bat on as he departed stumped by Dhoni for 57, that CSK found themselves edge their way back into the match. Vijay Shankar (26) and Yusuf Pathan to follow were way too slow, eating up far too many balls between them to see SRH lose momentum and scamper their way past the 170-run mark in the end.

Coming out to chase, CSK knew that despite reeling SRH back in the death overs, this was always going to a tricky target to navigate. With the in-form Faf du Plessis going early, Watson and Raina for the first wicket, doled out exactly what Warner and Manish had. The two between them all but won the match for their side with a partnership that saw CSK face no hurdles.

Despite Raina walking back for 38, Watson had no troubles in bringing down the run rate as he found the boundary at will. The 96-run innings took 10 matches coming, innings in which he had completely faltered as a batsman but one that finally turned out to be a performance that won the match for his side.
