60 rampant matches, roughly 2 months of pure entertainment and after some absolutely brilliant matches, we’ve finally been given our IPL 2019 champions. It’s the Mumbai Indians who prevailed through in the end, in an edge of the seat thriller to push across the line by the barest of margins. A humdinger of a summit clash, one that went down right to the last ball saw the Indians hold their composure to walk away with the glistening trophy for a record fourth time.

In the end, the much-awaited final didn’t disappoint us in the slightest. It was a true testament to the rousing cricket we’ve been feasted two across the showpiece league, a riveting encounter that kept us right on the hinges throughout the four hours. Quality wise, it might not have been the most alluring of finals but the twists and turns it provided us ensured that millions across the cricketing fraternity were glued in right till the end.

Defending 149 on a surface that was more than willing to reward pure, clean Strokeplay, the Indians were being edged out of the clash as Shane Watson kept shutting the door for them. As Jasprit Bumrah kept waging a lone battle from one end, the rest of the bowling unit bar Rahul Chahar did everything to squander away the advantage Bumrah kept granting them.

The inning started off in perfect fashion for the Super Kings with them completely in control at the halfway stage. Despite getting Faf du Plessis to walk back early, his 26-run innings in 13 balls had done its work, pummelling MI right under pressure in the early stages itself. The innings also allowed Watson to take his time and slowly settle down in the middle to what became yet another big core from him in a final for the Super Kings.

What did see the Indians make some headway and regain lost ground in the encounter was Raina’s dismissal in the 10th over. Trapped straight in front by Rahul, his review went futile and as Bumrah wrapped up Rayadu for just the one run soon after, the Indians had successfully dealt a double blow on CSK.

However, the wicket that really tilted the encounter in the defending side’s favour was that of Dhoni. Going for a second, Dhoni was caught short of his non-striker’s end with a direct throw doing him in. It was a needless bit of cricket, one that the third umpire took an eternity to adjudge. As time kept passing by and the different dimensions from which the third umpire kept viewing it increased, a not out looked likely before the giant screen eventually gave Dhoni out for 2 runs.

From there on it was all MI. Despite Watson trying his best to keep CSK in the chase, particularly taking apart Pandya for 20 runs in the 18th over, Bumrah was just impossible for CSK’s unit to handle. With just 8 runs in his last two overs, Bumrah delivered a rousing performance, one that ensured MI were able to clutch at straws and pull through in the end.

Earlier in the day, Pollard’s 41 in the lower middle-order was the only reason the Indians had managed to put on even 149 after their entire middle-order was decimated for just 59 runs which saw them lose 6 wickets in it.
