The Indian Premier League 2019 edition was a feisty affair, heatedly contested between the eight franchisees as teams went all out in their goal to get the best players available on the market. Looking to strengthen their teams to the core with the purse available to them, team management spared no expense as they splashed the cash out on the players handpicked by them. We take a look at IPL auction 2019 most expensive buys and the reason teams spent so heavily on them.
Jaydev Unadkat- Rs. 8.4 crore, Rajasthan Royals
IPL 2018’s most expensive Indian player, Jaydev Unadkat who was purchased for Rs. 11.5 crore by the Rajasthan Royals was released by team owing to inconsistent performances in the 11th edition of the Indian Premier League. He, however, was snapped up once again by the Royals for a record amount at the auction for next year’s event who won a three-way bidding battle against Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab and themselves to pick him up for Rs. 8.4 crore to make him the most expensive player of IPL 2019.
The buy was perhaps the most surprising at the auction with Unadkat hardly living up to the hefty price tag put on him in IPL 2018. He doesn’t offer a huge skill set with the ball and it is questionable why a team who decided not to retain him would pick him up once again for such a massive price.
Sam Curran- Rs.7.2 crore, Kings XI Punjab
The man of the series in the five-match test series held between India and England earlier this year picked up the biggest pay cheque from the foreign players with the Punjab outfit splashing out a huge amount of Rs. 7.2 crore for his services. His gutsy performances recently have shown that he can be quite the asset with both the bat and ball and this saw him go for such a high amount with his initial base price of Rs.2 crore skyrocketing after an intense bidding war.
Colin Ingram- Rs.6.4 crore, Delhi Capitals
The second highest paid overseas player, Ingram joined a franchise for which he’s plied his trade earlier. He was a part of the Delhi team in 2011 but could only manage to get playing time in three matches. The South African was wanted by the newly revamped Delhi Capitals side who looked to add some hard-hitting down the order and his latest exploits in the limited over format saw him become one of the IPL auction 2019 most expensive buys after DC edged out SRH in the battle for his signature.
