Juventus Crumble against Atletico Madrid, City Comeback
Atletico Madrid vs Juventus, 2-0
Ever since Juventus’ line-up was announced, it of one that was highly tepid in its approach, set out to be extremely defensive, a tactic that eventually let them down in the round of 16 encounter. Playing straight into the hands of one of the most defensively astute sides in the tournament, Juventus were blown apart in the second half which the home side completely controlled. In a match bereft with dubious decisions by the VAR, one that left Atletico Madrid bereft of at least one goal, the home side finally took the lead after a skirmish in the box. It was a much-deserved lead, one that had earned after being the only side who had played in the second 45 with Juventus’ far from impressive midfield failing to control the game. Paired with a poor display at the back with their defenders caught out of position far too often, Juventus went onto concede the second of the night soon after, seeing them go into the second leg match two weeks after facing an audacious task against a side who are known to deliver defensive masterclasses as per their wishes.
Schalke vs Manchester City, 2-3
Given the easiest match of all the premier league sides, Manchester City controlled the game for most of the first half; worked the ball about with relative ease and fluently as they looked to build on the early lead given to them by striker Aguero who has been in effervescent touch of late. However, a VAR decision to award a penalty against them turned the match on its head, seeing them go berserk as they started falling apart, conceding another soon after, both of which were converted by Schalke to see them go into half-time with an unlikely 2-1 lead. The match turned from bad to worse for City with them getting a red card early into the second half and it seemed to be a result that was all out of their grasps now. However, for no fathomable reason, Schalke decided to sit back on their lead, failing to make the most of the man advantage at their disposal, allowing City to play their usual attacking brand of football, one that saw them score two late goals and complete a marvelous comeback in which they showed immense fighting spirit on the night.
