Karva Chauth 2017 – Timings, Do’s and Dont’s of Karva Chauth

Karva Chauth is the most important day for Hindu married women. They fast for the well-being and long life of their husbands. The fast starts with the sunrise and ends by offering Ardhya (water) to Moon. You cannot eat or drink anything during the fast. Karva Chauth 2017 is on 8th October. Expected time of moonrise is 08.30pm.

 

Preparations for Karva Chauth
Women start preparing for Karva Chauth before a month from the actual day. Shopping for new clothes and matching jewelry is more like a part of the festivities. Shopping continues with matching bangles, matching shoes, new cosmetics and yes the puja items. Applying Hina on Karva Chauth is a must.

 

Rituals of Karva Chauth
The Karva Chauth day begins with eating ‘Sargi’ (food) before sunrise. It generally comprises of Feni, fruits, dry fruits, a parantha or poori as per choice, fresh coconut. Feni and Coconut are an essential part, rest is a matter of choice. As per the ritual, the sargi items are given by the Mother-in-law or any elder women in the husband’s family.Karva Chauth benefits

 

In the evening, a special pooja ceremony is held, which can be either at someone’s home, in a park or a temple. Women decorate their ‘Thalis’ which has items they would like to offer to their mother-in-law as ‘Baya’. The items generally included are Mathi – both salted and sweet, dry fruits, Saree or a Suit and some cash. If you can afford, you can even add jewellery. The story is narrated by one of the women or the priest and all puja rituals are performed.

 

The fast is opened only after looking at the Moon through a sieve and offering Ardhya (water) to the moon. The first sip of water and first bite of food for opening the fast is offered by the husband.

 

Points to remember as per Hindu rituals:
– Don’t wake up any person who is sleeping.
– Don’t try to please anyone who may have gotten angry or displeased.
– Do not use needles in any form, even for stitching.
– Don’t wear clothes in Black or Blue color.
– Don’t eat or drink anything during the fast.
– Do include milk or juice in Sargi.

 

There’s no compulsion for fasting on Karva Chauth. Do it if you really want to. We believe that it’s one more way of showing love for your life partner.
