Kidambi Srikanth Wins French Open Super Series. What a year it is turning out to be for Kidambi Srikanth. The Indian continued his purple patch as he went on to win the French Open Super Series after running over Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in the final. Srikanth won 21-14,21-13, in a match where he was hardly tested to life his fourth super series title of the year, once again proving his title as the King Of Pace.
A clearly superior Srikanth ran to victory in the final which also saw him move up to second place in the International Badminton Rankings. His intimidating pace once again showed why he loves fast courts, having won all four of his titles this year on them. He used this once again to his advantage as we went on to crush his opponent, stunning Nishimoto time and time again with his lightning-quick returns and smashes.
“I’m just happy with the way it has gone for me in the last couple of weeks. There were some close matches and I feel I was a bit lucky in those matches. But I’m very happy with the way it went, the way I was playing,” Srikanth told the Paris media. “I think in the semis and quarters I felt that I started slow. So I wanted to start off a bit better. He (Nishimoto) is an aggressive attacking player so I didn’t want to give him that chance,” he said.
His coach Gopichand: “It reinforces his calibre as one of the world’s best.” While Srikanth is yet to win a medal at the Olympics or Worlds, Gopichand reckons it’s a matter of time. Rio saw Srikanth lose narrowly to Lin Dan, while Glasgow’s slow courts had proved his undoing.
His 2017 Super Series wins include titles in Indonesia and Australia in June, Denmark in October, and now the French Super Series .With two Super Series tournaments still left in the year, in China and Hong Kong, Srikant will be looking to add to his six Super Series Title with another perfect tournament.
