DPR Korea lift the Intercontinental Cup 2019

DPR Korea Intercontinental Cup – After India drew the match against Syria, the final was set between Tajikistan and DPR Korea. Tajikistan finished first in the points table where as DPR Korea finished second. India finished last in the points table for the Intercontinental Cup 2019. It was an interesting final as both of the lower ranked teams made it to the final. North Korea defeated Tajikistan 1-0 at the EKA Arena in Ahmedabad.

Korea had already defeated Tajikistan in the group stage and were going into the game as favorites. The match was about witness its first goal around the 20th minute when Jong Il Gwan came close to scoring the first goal but the Tajikistan defence did well to hold down the Korean attack in the first half. The first and the only goal of the game came in the second half after the substitution of Pak Hyon Il who minutes after coming onto the pitch netted the goal in the 71st minute bringing glory to North Korea.

As the result of winning the cup, North Korea will take home a prize money of USD 50,000 while Tajikistan will also get richer by USD 25,000. After the game the Head Coach of Tajikistan, Usman Toshev said that participating in the tournament was a big lesson for the team and they are taking back valuable lessons that will help them improve in the future. When asked about the final he said “We congratulate DPR Korea on the victory.” He felt that his side lacked the stamina and that this was a big lesson for them ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers.

DPR Korea’s Head Coach, Yun Jong Su said that the tournament was wonderfully hosted and they were glad that they got the opportunity to be a part of it. He said that winning has given them a lot of confidence but they also need to work on certain areas. The Intercontinental Cup was formerly held by the Indian team which is now passed on over to DPR Korea. India will be facing the same Korean team again in the World Cup Qualifiers.
