Labour day 2022 – May Day 2021 – May Day History – why celebrate labour day
The origin of the Labour Day dates back to 1 May 1886. This was the day when labour unions in the USA decided to go on a strike with the demand that workers must not be asked to work for more than 8 hours a day. The strike was then followed by a bomb blast in Chicago’s Haymarket Square on 4th May which led to the death of numerous people and police officers.
Although the protests in the US didn’t lead to any immediate result but it helped in the establishment of the 8-hour working norm in India and other countries around the world. Since then, Labour Day is observed as the day for parades and demonstrations around the world. Working people in India and around the world celebrate this day for protests by participating in processions to defend their rights and to safeguard their interests.
