Lionel Messi 700 goals – Argentine legend Lionel Messi scored the 700th goal of his career with a phenomenal penalty kick against Atletico Madrid in a La Liga encounter on Tuesday. His left-footed shot sent the ball to the bottom left corner of Atletico’s goal sending goalkeeper Jan Oblak the wrong way. Though, the match ended in a 2-2 draw and left Barcelona hanging by a thread, desperately needing a miracle to win the La Liga title which would otherwise go to arch-rivals Real Madrid. His 700th career goal came at an empty Camp Nou stadium in his 724th match for Barcelona. Out of his 700 goals, he has scored 630 goals for the La Liga defending champions and the other 30 goals came for the Argentine National Team in 138 appearances. His eventful goal came after a duration of almost 8 days since his successful penalty conversion in Barca’s win over Leganes on June 16 marked his 699th career goal.

He long broke the record for scoring the most goals for both his club and his nation. He broke Cesar Rodriguez’s record of 212 goals for Barcelona in 2012 while he overtook Argentina’s Gabriel Batistuta’s 52 goals in 2016. Not only does he hold the top goal scorer records for his club and country but also for the prestigious La Liga competition. He has been the footballer with the highest number of goals scored in La Liga since 2014. He overtook former Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra’s record of 251 La Liga goals in 2014. The only footballer near him is Cristiano Ronaldo who had scored 311 goals in La Liga before moving to Juventus in 2018.

Messi’s record-shattering 700th career goal was his 22nd goal of the season. In order to win his fourth consecutive European Golden Shoe award and his seventh overall, he has to overcome Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski’s 34 goals with 5 matches in his hand.

Messi achieved this landmark in his career in just 862 games while Ronaldo took 111 more games than his Catalan rival to enter the 700-goal club at the end of 2019. Though, the Portuguese legend still holds the record for the highest number of goals for any active footballer till date.
