The festival of Magh Bihu begins with Uruka, also known as Bighu Eve. Uruka implies the beginning of an end, i.e., the end of the harvesting season and the month of Paush. The festival of Magh Bihu is an important cultural festival for the people of Assam because of its agricultural and harvesting significance. Magh Bihu Celebrations
The festival of Magh Bihu is celebrated for two days in the state of Assam. On the occasion of Magh Bihu, community people celebrate by feasting, which is also known as Bhuj. Several tribes come together to celebrate the festival of Magh Bihu. Yong men of the communities build huts with bamboo sticks and leaves. Following the making of makeshift huts, community members spend the night in the huts also, known as Bhelaghars. The festivities of Magh Bihu continue on the next day and after the ceremonial bathing, a bonfire is lit which is also known as Meji. People light bonfires in their fields and offer their prayers to God and make their offerings. The makeshift huts or Bhelaghars are set on fire, and the residue from Meji and Bhelaghar is believed to make the fields more fertile.
