North India floods, Kedarnath Tragedy (2013)
In the early hours of 17 June 2013, a flash flood came down upon the overflowing banks of the Chorabari Lake in Uttarakhand. It carried huge amounts of silt and rocks. What actually happened was between 13 and 17 June in 2013 when Uttarakhand received an unusual amount of rainfall. This melted the Chorabari glacier and the eruption of the Mandakini River happened. The rainfall caused massive landslides and floods resulting in the death of residents and tourists. This disaster took place in Kedarnath valley which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The flood destroyed the lives of more than 5000 people, houses, and everything that came its way. It is considered one of the major avalanches in India.

Gurez sector avalanche (2017)
The Gurez Avalanche Accident was a series of four avalanches that was witnessed in Kashmir valley. It claimed the lives of 24 persons, including 20 soldiers and 4 civilians. Kashmir valley witnessed multiple snowfall spells in January 2017 that triggered the avalanche. There was heavy snowfall before the accident. The first avalanche hit on 25 January 2017 morning in which a family of four civilians died. The second avalanche took place at the same time in Sonmarg, where an army camp was located. In the evening, two avalanches again hit the Gurez Valley, where the bodies of 10 soldiers were recovered from the area. On 28 January, 4 more bodies were found taking the death toll to 15 soldiers.
Chamoli, Uttarakhand (2021)
A major disaster was witnessed in the Chamoli district, Uttrakhand on 7 February 2021. A glacier broke after an avalanche in the Joshimath area in Chamoli district. There were reports of missing people and damage to property. On 7 February at around 10:30 AM, a huge amount of water started coming in the Rishiganga River. Two power projects i.e. NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project and the Rishi Ganga Hydel Project were extensively damaged. According to the experts, the reduced snowfall this winter in Uttarakhand seemsed to have played a part in the disaster.
