Dhyan Chand Singh was born in 1905 in Allahabad. His birthday is celebrated all over the country as National Sports Day. Every year on this day, the players who have excelled in sports are given the highest sports honors, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna and Dronacharya awards.

Dhyan Chand had joined the Indian Army at the age of 16. After his selection in the Army, he started playing hockey. Dhyan Chand used to practice till late at night, because of which his peers named him Chand.
