It is an auspicious day of fasting by men and women dedicated to the supreme Lord Shiva for a better future, improved living and good health. It is believed that chanting of “Om Namah Shivay” keeps you away from the worldly pains and desires. Performing pooja on this day with pure heart following all the rituals is believed to bring in outbound happiness, speedy recovery, success, and that one can attain liberation, salvation and freedom from all the miseries and stress. In the month of Magha, Masik Shivaratri is known as Maha Shivaratri. The festival of Shivaratri is a culmination of Shiva and Shakti which is together seen as strength.

How to keep Masik Shivratri Fast
Devotees should follow some rituals on Masik Shivaratri to please Lord Shiva:
- Taking bath with sesame seeds to remove impurities.
- Visiting the temple dedicated to the Lord Shiva and recite hymns, bhajans and chant mantras.
- Offering wood-apple leaves, betel leaves, rice, fruits, honey, yogurt, sandalwood paste, flowers and incense stick to Lord Shiva.
- Lighting of diyas and candles to invoke the blessings of the supreme Lord.
- The sacred ash or Vibhuti is applied by the devotees on their forehead.
- Chanting of “Om Namah Shivaya”, as it is believed, helps to liberate individuals from their previous sins.
