On Meerabai Jayanti 2021, we bring you some facts related to Mirabai. Mirabai, also revered as the Sant Meerabai, is known worldwide as an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. She was a Hindu mystic poetess of the 16th century and an exponent of the Divine Love or Prema Bhakti. She is cherished as a Bhakti Saint in the Hindu tradition of North India as mentioned in Bhaktamal, a poem in Braj language, which was written in 1585 by Nabha Dass (a saint who belonged to the Ramananda tradition).
Meerabai Jayanti – Meerabai early life
Mirabai was a Rajput princess born in 1504 AD at Chaukhari Village, Merta district, Rajasthan. Merta, at that time, was ruled by Rathors, the great devotees of Lord Vishnu. Ratan Singh was her father, who was the son of Rao Duda Ji, a descendant of the founder of Jodhpur, Rao Jodha Ji Rathore. She was married to Bhoj Raj, the prince of Mewar, in 1516 who died in 1521 during the ongoing wars with the Delhi Sultanate.
Mira was nurtured by her grandfather in her childhood and was trained to wield weapons. She was taught music, scriptures, archery, music, driving chariots, and horse riding. The atmosphere of total Krishna consciousness, during her childhood, moulded her path of life towards a life of devotion and she started treating Lord Krishna as her husband. She was well-known for being fearless despite her family conventions and was also persecuted by her in-laws for her devotion.
Many devotional hymns are attributed to Mirabai composed by those who admired her and are popular all over India. Temples in the Hindu religion, such as in Chittorgarh Fort, are dedicated in the memory of Mirabai.
Meerabai Jayanti – Meerabai Compositions
Mirabai wrote many poems with a unique writing style that is a culmination of impassionate mood, longing anticipation, defiance, joy, and ecstasy of union, all centred on Krishna. They are written in the Rajasthani language in the form of lyrical padas. Numerous compositions of Mirabai are sung today as devotional songs by devotes in India. The most popular recital among all her poetry is “Paayoji Maine Ram Ratan Dhan Payao” where Krishna is mentioned as a yogi and lover and Mirabai herself acts as a yogini.
In Sanson ki Mala Pe Simru Main Pi Ka Naam, Mirabai has mentioned her personal relationship with Krishna as her lover, a mountain lifter, and a lord. Other well-known compositions are:
- Raag Govind
- Govind Tika
- Raag Soratha
- Mira Padavali
- Geet Govind
- Meera ki Malhar
Her life has been interpreted in a musical story titled “Meera-The Lover….” released in 2009.
Meerabai Jayanti celebrations
At present, Meera Smrithi Sansthan and Chittorgarh district officials organize Meera Mahotsav annually on the day of Sharad Purnima for three days. Here, many famous singers get together to celebrate the life of Mirabai by singing hymns composed by her along with dance, puja, and fireworks.
The Meera Mahal in Rajasthan continues to elevate the presence of Mirabai and her real-life stories along with a huge collection of paintings and scriptures.
A rare temple dedicated to Mirabai, Chaturbhuja Temple in Merta, showcases the monolithic deity of Mirabai along with Lord Krishna in a way that their eyes meet each other. It is a must-visit place to witness the compassion and devotion of Mirabai.
