He wasn’t just a captain but was also a good batsman. From his 230 matches and 220 ODI innings, Ponting has scored the most runs as the skipper of the team. Ponting has 8407 runs to his name and averaged 42 in the 50 over format. Punter also scored 22 tons and 61 fifties. He was instrumental in the ICC World Cup wins 2003 and 2007. He led Australia to the victory in the ICC Champions Trophy which was held in 2009. Ponting scored his best score of 164 in his own leadership.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
The Captain Cool of India. MS Dhoni is one of the most brilliant captains India has produced till now. MSD is a successful skipper for India in the 50 over format. He has led India in 200 ODIs from the year 2007 to 2017. Now, he is the second most successful captains of India in the ODI format. From those 200 One Day Internationals matches, MSD scored 6641 runs at an awesome average of 53.56. This average is the third-best amongst AB De Villers and Virat Kohli. Dhoni also led India to the World Cup Title win in 2011 and the Champions Trophy win in England in 2013. Dhoni also struck 6 centuries and 46 fifties in his captaincy career and his best score in his captaincy period has been 139 not out.
Stephen Fleming
The former Kiwi skipper was the lone warrior for New Zealand. Stephen Fleming was the second most capped skipper for New Zealand. Fleming has appeared for 218 ODI matches and 208 ODI innings as the skipper of the team. From those matches, he scored 6295 runs at an average of 32.79 with 7 hundreds and 38 fifties. Fleming led New Zealand from 1997 to 2007. He also lead the Kiwis to the semi-finals of the 2003 and 2007 world cup and the finals of the Champions Trophy.

Arjuna Ranatunga
Arjuna Ranatunga was the man behind Sri Lanka’s only World Cup win in 1996. Arjuna was the most attacking captain that Sri Lankans ever had. He served 11 years for Sri Lanka and became the most successful skipper of the team. Ranatunga played 193 ODIs as the skipper and scored 5608 runs with 4 centuries and 37 half-centuries to his name in these matches. He averaged 37.64 during his captaincy stint. Arjuna was the most successful captains for Sri Lanka in the 50 over format. The 1996 world cup win is proof of that.
Graeme Smith
The Proteas skipper Graeme Smith comes as once in across decades. He was the best South African skipper ever and that too in all the three formats of the game. Smith led South Africa in 149 ODI matches and in that, he has scored 5414 runs at an average of 37 with 8 hundreds and 37 fifties to his name. His 141 runs against England is his highest score as the skipper of the team. He led South Africa for 8 long years and he was the longest-serving captain for them. In the ODIs, South Africa was crowned as the number 1 ranked team and that came in the leadership of Graeme Smith.
Mohd Azharuddin
The man who had many talents. Mohammad Azharuddin was the second most successful captains for India in the 50 over format. He was given the captaincy in 1990 till he was banned from playing due to the match-fixing allegations in 1999. Azhar led India in 174 ODIs and 162 innings, from these matches, he scored 5169 runs at an average of 38.08 with 4 tons and 36 fifties. His knock of 153 not out against Zimbabwe was his highest score as the skipper of the team. Azhar led India to the semi-finals of the 1996 world cup.

Saurav Ganguly
The Prince of Kolkata, Saurav Ganguly is the man who taught India to win overseas. He was given the captaincy in the toughest phase of Indian cricket. This happened during the match-fixing saga reeling in India and led the team out of this. He also reinstalled the faith back in the Indian fans. Dada has captained India in 147 ODIs and has scored 5104 runs with that. He scored 11 centuries and 30 fifties to his name. His 144 run knock against Zimbabwe was the highest score by him as the skipper of the team. Saurav led India to the semi-finals of the 2000 Champions Trophy and the 2003 world cup. He also led India in the famous Natwest Trophy in England 2002 and also captained India in their maiden Champions Trophy which they played in 2000.

In that, he has scored 4800 runs at the best average of 77.39. This is the highest average by any captains in One Day Internationals. Kohli has scored 21 hundreds and 19 fifties as the skipper. Now, Kohli is just 1 ton away from equalling Ricky Pointing’s 22 hundreds. His highest score as the skipper is 160 not out and that came against South Africa at Newlands. Kohli won the first-ever ODI series on the South African soil. He won it by the margin of 5-1 in 2018. He also led India in the Champions Trophy final in 2017 and the semi-finals of the world cup in 2019.
AB de Villers
Mr 360 degree player was the man above averages. ABD was the most inspirational skipper during his short span. He led South Africa in 103 ODIs and scored 4796 runs to his name and averaged 64 in his captaincy career. He scored 13 tons and 27 fifties as a skipper of the team. ABD was the skipper with the best batting average. His phenomenal knock of 162 not out of just 66 balls against West Indies was his highest score as the skipper.

He was the man who led Australia and then became a mighty side, unbeatable side. Allan Border was the most capped captains of the time. He led Australia in 178 ODI matches and 168 innings in which he scored 4439 runs at an average of 32.17 with 2 tons and 27 half-centuries to his name. His unbeaten 127 run knock against West Indies came in winning cause at Sydney. Border also led Australia in the 1987 world cup win.
