The world record for taking the most wickets on Test debut is in the name of former Indian spinner Narendra Hirwani. In his debut Test match which was played on 11th January 1988, Hirwani created a sensation against the West Indies at Chennai. He took 8 wickets in both innings of that test match and announced himself at the International arena. However, he could play just 17 Test matches for India. His last Test match was against South Africa in 1996. He took 66 wickets in all.

Mohammad Shami – 9 wickets
Presently, Mohammed Shami has been India’s leading weapon of fast bowling. He holds the second position in this list. Shami made his Test debut against West Indies at the Eden Gardens ground in Kolkata. In this match, this lethal bowler made a significant contribution to his team’s victory. He got 4 wickets in the first innings and bagged his maiden 5 wicket haul in the second innings of that test match. Shami holds the record of most wickets in the current World Test Championship as well.

Ravichandran Ashwin – 9 wickets
Ravichandran Ashwin was the most preferred spin bowling all-rounder for India across the format. Ashwin made his Test debut against West Indies at Feroz Shah Kotla ground in Delhi. In this match, Ashwin took a total of 9 wickets, out of which 3 wickets were taken in the first innings and 6 in the second innings. Now Ashwin is the best choice for India in Test matches alongside Ravindra Jadeja.

Dileep Doshi – 8 wickets
The former Indian left-arm orthodox bowler Dilip Doshi made his Chennai Test debut against Australians on 11th September 1979. In this test, Doshi picked up 8 wickets of the Kangaroo team. He bagged a 6 wicket haul in the first innings and later in the 2nd innings, Doshi took two more wickets.
