Owing to his beginning in the journey in wicketkeeping to his P.E. teacher, Keshab Ranjan Banerjee, Dhoni went on to become one of the best young talents of his districts, smashing fours and sixes off opposition’s bowlers. It was the BCCI’s new Training Research Development Wing initiative which helped Mahi make his mark on the eyes of selectors. His journey in cricket began when he was selected for an A tour to Kenya, on which he destroyed the bowlers of the opposition and became the talk of the town. He was finally feathered with the Team India Cap on being selected for the Bangladesh tour in 2004. Dhoni had some tough luck and ended up scoring a string of low scores including a duck in his first match. After being given one more chance in the subsequent ODI series against Pakistan, Dhoni showed the world his true class with his mesmerizing 148 in the fifth ODI. He scored his highest score in ODIs in 2005 against Sri Lanka when he bulldozed his way to a 183 not out.

The Dhoni Era:

After cementing his place in the Indian Cricket Team as a wicketkeeper-batsman, Dhoni was made the captain of the side after Rahul Dravid stepped down as the ODI skipper and Test skipper Anil Kumble retired in 2008. He began his stint as the skipper by leading an inexperienced Indian team to win the inaugural T20 World Cup against arch-rivals Pakistan in the finals. The Captain Cool, as he is known till date, developed the ability to switch on and switch off his destruction mode, playing totally as per the requirements of the match. His golden era as Team India Skipper had already begun with him leading the country to Number 1 in ICC Test Rankings for the first time in history. Perhaps the greatest feat that people will remember is him leading India to win the World Cup in 2011, but Dhoni was so much more than that. He completely revolutionized the way people perceive cricket in India, throwing a strong emphasis on nurturing young talent and significantly improving the fielding ability of Team India over the years. After going through a rough phase owing to a string of series losses after the World Cup in England and Australia, he achieved something extraordinary yet again – whitewashing Australia in a Test Series at home and becoming the most successful Indian Skipper of all time and then leading India to their maiden Champions Trophy title in 2013, becoming the only Captain to have won all three ICC trophies. Dhoni’s ability to finish games as per his will while taking them to literally the last ball earned him the fear and respect of bowlers all around the world. Some of his extraordinary finishes include: butchering a 112-meter six to clear the Adelaide boundary with 12 to win off 4 in the CB series, chasing down 15 in the last over in the Celkon Cup final and chasing 23 off the last over in IPL 2016; with the equation boiling down to 12 from 2, he brought the opposition to their knees by scoring two massive consecutive sixes.

The final years:

Dhoni retired from Test Cricket in 2014 following the draw against Australia in Melbourne. He left his successor- Virat Kohli, a fit and energetic team hungry for a win. After scoring a fighting 65 in a chase against Australia in the 2015 World Cup semi-finals, India were defeated by 95 runs and Dhoni was again the lone warrior in the chase. In 2017, Dhoni stepped down as the captain of the Indian ODI and T20I team, bringing about the end of an era in Indian cricket. A dip in the form in the subsequent years led some critics questioning his place in the team. Dhoni was last seen in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in 2019 in which despite him scoring 50 off 72 deliveries, India were defeated by 18 runs.
