Now, Virat Kohli has been a full-time captain of team India. After Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy in 2017. Both have done well as the Indian captains and their records have something to say.
When MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli were given the test captaincy, they both started their test captaincy career in the same way. Both were unbeatable at home. This is the only similarity between the ex-skipper and the current skipper of Team India. Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are different in their characters, Kohli is an aggressive captain and he loves to express himself on the field. Dhoni could win only one overseas series, which was against New Zealand in 2009.

Virat Kohli has scored runs everywhere. He hit two centuries on his captaincy debut against Australia. He scored 119 runs in the first innings and 147 runs in the second innings at Adelaide. He was the first and the youngest captain of India to achieve that feat. Virat Kohli has scored more runs away from home. In 28 matches, Kohli has scored 4515 runs at an average of 62.70 with 18 hundred and 10 fifties. If we compare these records with Dhoni, one should say that MS Dhoni has a pretty ordinary record away from home.

Dhoni started his test captaincy career at home. But Virat Kohli started his captaincy career abroad, in Australia. This the main difference between these two. But the thing is, Dhoni was tested in England, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Virat Kohli has been tested in England, South Africa, and Australia. It won’t be easy to beat these teams in their own den. India has won a Test series in England under Rahul Dravid in 2007, in New Zealand under MS Dhoni in 2009 and now in Australia under Virat Kohli in 2018 but has never won a Test series in South Africa.
As captain, Dhoni scored 5 test hundreds and one double hundred. But Kohli has scored 18 test hundreds and 5 double hundreds. Dhoni has scored 3454 runs in 60 matches as a captain while Kohli has played 46 test matches till now and he has scored 4515 runs. He is the first and only Indian captain to score two or more double hundreds. His 235 against England at Mumbai is the highest score by an Indian Captain in the test. Kohli is also a first test captain to hit 3 centuries in his first 3 innings.
Records will tumble as Kohli will play. He has a better record than Dhoni in test cricket. In One Day Internationals, Kohli has captained 20 games and has won 16 of them and lost 4 matches. In those 20 matches, he has scored 1035 runs at an average of 69 with 5 hundred and 4 fifties. Dhoni, on the other hand, had a longer ODI captaincy career. In 199 matches, he has scored 6633 at an average of 52.82 with 6 hundred and 47 fifties. Out of the 200 matches, India has won 110 and lost 74 matches.
MS Dhoni vs Kohli
While Dhoni stepped down from his captaincy he said that Virat Kohli can break all his captaincy records. Kohli has the hunger and passion to win games for India. He thinks only about the win. That is very true. Under Kohli, India went till the final of the Champions Trophy and India ended up their dream run at the world cup in the semi-finals. Till now Kohli has captained India in 77 matches and India has won 56 of those and lost only 19 games. In those 77 matches, Kohli has scored 4566 runs with 19 hundred and 19 fifties.
In T20s Dhoni captained India in 72 T20I matches. He won 41 of those and lost 28 of them. In 72 matches he has scored 1112 runs with no centuries and no fifties to his name whereas Kohli has captained India in just 22 T20I matches till now and he won 12 and lost 9. He has scored just 606 runs in those matches till now. With 4 half-centuries to his name. Kohli won a T20 series in South Africa and England. Whereas Dhoni won the One Day series in England in 2014. But he never won a one day series in South Africa and they both won the One day series in New Zealand.
Kohli was the first Indian captain to win a T20I match and the series against New Zealand. Dhoni lost all the T20I matches that he played against the Kiwis.
