  • Narendra Modi stadium is the world’s largest cricket stadium spread across 63 acres in Ahmedabad. It is situated inside the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave.
  • The name of the stadium has been changed a few times. Originally named Gujarat Stadium, it was later changed to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium.  The name was also called Motera Stadium.
  • The stadium was first renovated in 2006.
  • Stadium was again closed in 2015 for renovation and was reopened for matches on 24 February 2021.
  • While inaugurating the stadium, President Ram Nath Kovind renamed it as Narendra Modi stadium.
  • It had hosted its first ODI back in the year 1984.

  • The stadium has a capacity of 1, 32,000 spectators and around Rs. 800 crores have been spent to rebuild the stadium.
  • It has an innovative drainage system that will allow the action to resume within 30 minutes of heavy rain.
  • Total area of the stadium is around 32 Olympic-size football fields put together.
  • The stadium has 76 corporate boxes each of which can hold 25 persons.
  • It is the only stadium in the world to have four dressing rooms.
  • Outside the main stadium, there’s an Olympic sized swimming pool, an indoor cricket academy, a table tennis area, tennis and badminton, a squash arena, a 3D projector theatre, and a clubhouse with 3 practice grounds and 50 rooms.
  • Unlike other stadiums that have floodlights, the stadium has LED lights on the roof.
  • It has an innovative drainage system that will allow the action to resume within 30 minutes of heavy rain.
  • The parking space of the stadium is the biggest all across the world.  Around 3,000 cars and 10,000 two-wheelers can be parked at the venue.
  • The stadium is linked with the Ahmedabad metro, making it easy for people to reach the stadium.

  • The stadium holds a special place for Kapil Dev. In 1983, Kapil claimed his 432nd Test wicket here and broke the record of Sir Richard Hadlee. The match was being played against West Indies.
  • It was in this stadium that Sunil Gavaskar touched the score of 10,000 runs in Test cricket while playing against Pakistan in 1987.
  • Sachin Tendulkar scored his first double-century in a Test Match here while playing against New Zealand in October 1999.
  • The stadium was where Sachin Tendulkar completed his 20 years of International Cricket in November 2009. The match was against Sri Lanka.
  • Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar achieved the milestone of 30000 runs in international cricket in 2009 while playing against Sri Lanka.
  • Sachin Tendulkar achieved the milestone of 18000 runs in ODIs here while playing the World Cup quarterfinal match against Australia in 2011.
  • South African cricketer AB de Villiers made his first double-century against India here in 2008.

Major Matches played at Narendra Modi Stadium – Motera stadium

  • Various Cricket World Cup matches in 1987, 1996 and 2011 have been played here.
  • Five out of the 15 matches of the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy were played here.
  • The first match after the inauguration was played between India and England, which was also the first-ever pink-ball Test match played here. India won this match by 10 wickets.

  • Government of Gujarat has also hosted various programs in the stadium.
  • Namaste Trump event was hosted for then US President Donald Trump here on 24 February 2020.
