Refrain from betting advertisements: I&B Ministry

  • Since betting and gambling are illegal in most parts of the country, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry have issued an advice to print, electronic, and digital media to avoid printing online betting advertisements. The advisory states that betting poses financial and socio-economic threats to the economy, especially for youth and children.

TMC’s plan for anti-BJP opposition in Presidential polls may not be successful

  • TMC leader Mamata Banerjee has called for 22 opposition leaders meeting on 15th June in New Delhi. The agenda of the meeting is to nominate a Presidential candidate against BJP’s candidate. However, Mamata’s plan might not succeed with Aam Aadmi Party, DMK, and the Left giving hints of not attending the meeting. With speculations that TMC may nominate Yashwant Sinha for the Presidential elections, opposition leaders have taken a backfoot.

India to hold a meeting with Pakistani delegation for SCO border

  • With Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting to take place on 15th-17th June, India has invited a delegation from Pakistan as well. The meeting will see participation from all SCO members including China and Russia.

Government to grant special remission to prisoners during Azadi ka Mahotsav

  • As part of Azadi ka Mahotsav, the government will be introducing special remission plan to release certain categories of prisoners. Prisoners who fulfil the requirement of special remission will be freed by respective states or UTs in 3 batches – 15th August 2022, 26th January 2023, and 15th August 2023.

New disability policy to provide early intervention centres and employment opportunities

  • The new National Policy for Persons with Disabilities will lead to develop ‘Cross Disability Early Intervention Centres’ at district level. The policy will also enable creation of employment portal and database.

  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has put rest to speculations and cleared that he is not in the race to become the next President of the country.

  • In the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council elections held in Assam, BJP won all 26 constituencies. 79% voter turnout was recorded in these elections.

West Bengal assembly passes bill for CM to replace governor as chancellor

  • The West Bengal state legislative assembly has passed the West Bengal University Laws (Amendment) Bill 2022. The bill aims to replace the governor with the Chief Minister as the chancellor of state-run universities.

UGC allows 4-year undergraduates to enrol for PhD admissions

  • The University Grants Commission has allowed students with a minimum CGPA score of 7.5/10 to enrol for PhD admission after completing their 4-years graduation. Such students do not need to attain a post-graduate degree to enrol for PhD.

Government to announce radical Agnipath scheme to recruit soldiers

  • The government will be announcing the radical Agnipath scheme to recruits soldiers in bulk for 4 years. The scheme will allow youngsters between the age group of 17.5-21 years to be introduced in the army for 4 years. They will receive basic training for 6 months and will be entitled to all benefits and rewards as regular army personnel.

  • The ISRO-NASA app challenge will be held on 1st and 2nd October. The hackathon will invite coders, scientist, entrepreneurs, etc., worldwide to participate in the challenge using Earth observation data.
