India brought they’re a game to the field on Monday when they faced Sri Lanka for the second time in the Nidahas Trophy. With the memories of their earlier defeat to Sri Lanka still fresh in their minds, India knew they would have to put on a better showing than last time if they had any chance of avenging that defeat. And that is just what they did after an all-around superb effort by the young Indian side saw them sail to victory by 6 wickets and with that move top of the points tally with two victories.
After rain interrupted play by more than hour, things finally got underway much to the delight of the packed stadium in Colombo. With ground staff working hard to clear up the ground, the match only lost one over with both the sides playing out 19 overs. Winning the toss in this crucial match, India chose to bowl first as they looked to make the most out of the wet conditions and bat on a comparatively drier pitch.
Sri Lanka got off to a belter of a start as their batsmen once again raked up the runs for them. They raced to 90 off their first 10 overs with Mendis and Tharanga putting on a well-stitched partnership of 62 runs. Mendis was the star of the Sri Lankan innings as he blazed shots all around the park to hit 3 fours and 3 sixes each in his stellar innings of 55 off just 38 balls. The dismissal of Tharanga and soon after of Mendis slowed things down for the hosts. From a comfortable position of 96-3, they went onto lose their way to end their innings at 152-9.
India did not have the best of starts as both their openers fell cheaply. It was another disappointing outing for Rohit and a surprise early dismissal for Dhawan let India stuttering at 62.-3. Pandey (42) and veteran keeper Karthik (39) took control of the chase of India from there on to ensure that India sealed the victory by 6 wickets.
