No-confidence motion – The Lok Sabha today will witness its first no-confidence vote against a ruling government in 15 years today. The BJP-led NDA government had agreed to the vote after an opposition of various parties had submitted papers for the no confidence motion which were admitted by speaker Sumitra Mahajan. With a move to kill off the Congress lead opposition claims of an united anti-NDA front gaining strength over the year, the NDA agreed to the motion.

no-confidence motion

Before we dwell into further details of the No-confidence motion, to take place today morning we tell you what is a no-confidence motion?

A government can function only when it has majority support in the Lok Sabha which is 273 out of the 504 seats. If any member of the House feels that the government in power does not have a majority then he/she can move a no-confidence motion against the ruling government. If the motion is accepted, then the party in power has to prove its majority in the House with discussions taking place followed by voting by the members.

With the motion a desperate attempt by the opposition to gain some kind of leverage before the general elections of 2019, it is wide belief that the move will back-fire for them badly come today morning. Discussions will be held and speeches given by both the parties in a bid to garner some last minute votes for their cause. The Lok Sabha session will be held on Friday with the Rajya Sabha session on Monday.

With Shiv Sena, AIADMK on its side the NDA is likely to sail through. The ruling party is expected to defeat the motion by virtue of its numbers in the Lok Sabha, with 273 members and the Narendra Modi lead NDA boasting of 314. With the opposition trying its hardest to garner up some numbers in their support to save face, as far as Thursday evening, Congress (48 MPs), TDP (15), TMC (34), NCP (7), CPI-M (9), AAP (4) and RJD (4) confirmed their support for the no-confidence motion, which only adds up to 122 members.  The much hyped about opposition by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi will be in for a drubbing come the end of the vote at Friday’s session of the Monsoon Lok Sabha session.

The NDA will take this opportunity to not only show their strength but also emphasise once again on the work done by the government over the past four years in the 3 hours and 33 minutes allotted to the BJP.

We shall keep you updated on the results of the No-confidence vote.
