Novak Djokovic Retirement News – On Sunday night in New York, Stan Wawrinka the three-time grand slam winner struck again stunning the world No. 1 and defending US Open champion Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the US Open 2019. It was a rematch of the 2016 US Open final, which Wawrinka won in four sets. Djokovic who has been battling a left shoulder injury as of late elected to retire in the third set when Wawrinka was leading by a breakpoint, this decision led to the fans booing the Serbian. “It’s never the way you want to finish a match,” Wawrinka said on court. “I’m really sorry for Novak. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing champion. We’ve played some amazing battles all my career. I feel sorry for him. I want to keep my level (from) tonight. I think I was playing super good tennis. I am happy to be back.”

With this loss, Novak fails to get closer to Nadal’s 18 titles and Federer’s 20 on the all-time men’s list after winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year. In the post-match interview Novak said that it was no secret that he wanted to reach the goal of having the most slams which are currently being held by Roger Federer. Novak also mentioned that he feels great and knows that he still has a lot of playing time ahead of him. Novak Djokovic Retirement News – The winner of the match, Stan Wawrinka who was once ranked at a career-high No. 3 in 2014 has now fallen down to World Number 24 due to his knee surgery. Wawrinka mentioned that it took him two years after the injury to reach the same level that he was at and now he finally feels fit and ready to chase titles. Wawrinka is somewhat of a forgotten man in tennis but till date, he is the only player to win 3 grand slams while defeating the ‘big three’ in all the finals he has played.
