A World Cup Hundred for Babar Azam and a Crucial Victory for Pakistan

Pakistan Vs New Zealand Match Highlights – New Zealand’s Batting 

The Kiwis won the toss and batted first in this match. They needed to bat well but their openers continued their poor form in this tournament. Martin Guptill was out for just 5 runs. It was Mohd Amir who dismissed the Kiwi opener in the very first over. Then came the Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson, who was again under because of an early loss of wicket.

Colin Munro wanted to make a big, but it wasn’t to be. After Guptill, Munro too perished very early. He was out to Shaheen Shah Afridi for just 12 runs. New Zealand was under pressure just like their previous. But Kane Williamson stood there like before. New Zealand needed an innings as Williamson played against South Africa and West Indies. But they kept losing wickets at the other end.

The middle order batsmen continued their poor form. Ross Taylor and Tom Latham were out quickly. The full pressure was on the skipper Williamson. He stood tall once. But Shadab Khan pushed New Zealand further back. He dismissed the Kiwi skipper and gave Pakistan a vital of this modern day great batsman. Kane Williamson was out for 41 runs.

The Blackcaps were reeling at 84 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. All though it was over for New Zealand as their main batsmen were dismissed early in this innings., but it was a rescue act played from the Kiwi all-rounders. James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme took the responsibility and batted through the innings. They shared a partnership that brought them into the game. Both the Kiwi batters looked good and started attacking the Pakistani pacers after a slow start. They also reached their fifty and continued their innings. It was later part of the innings where New Zealand lost the wicket of de Grandhomme. He was unfortunately run out for 68 runs. New Zealand couldn’t finish the innings well but still, they had a defendable score on the board.

James Neesham was not out on 97 runs. It was his partnership with de Grandhomme took New Zealand to 238 runs for the loss of 6 wickets after they completed their 50 overs. It looked as New Zealand would have bowled out very quickly but the partnership of 132 runs saved New Zealand’s blushes.

Pakistan continued their good bowling form. They applied the pressure well on New Zealand’s batsmen but they couldn’t maintain that. Shaheen Shah Afridi bowled well, he was the star for Pakistan. He took 3 wickets with Mohd Amir and Shadab Khan took a wicket each to their name.

The chase of 239 was a tricky one for Pakistan as it was turning pitch, but the Kiwi had only one spinner.  The Birmingham wicket started to turn in the 2nd innings. New Zealand had only Mitchell Santner as their full-time spinner.  This helped Pakistan in a big way. They were very smart in their approach. They played the tuff overs and then targeted the other bowlers which brought the pressure back on New Zealand.

Even the Kiwis picked up the openers and Mohd Hafeez quickly, but they couldn’t maintain the same pressure on Babar Azam and Haris Sohail. It was their partnership that took control of the Pakistani innings. After losing Farkhar Zaman, Imam ul Haq and Mohd Hafeez quickly, Babar Azam and Haris Sohail shared a partnership which took the game away from New Zealand. In the meantime, Haris Sohail got to his 2nd back to back fifty in this tournament and Babar Azam became the first Pakistani middle order batsmen to score a World Cup century in 32 years. Pakistan was just a double away from the target but he was run out in the last. Haris Sohail was out after playing another match-winning hand. He was dismissed for 68 runs.

It was Sarfraz who finished off the game with the centurion at the other end. Sarfraz Khan was unbeaten on 5 runs and Babar Azam was 101 not out. Babar scored his 10th ODI hundred and his first one in this world cup 2019. He played an excellent knock and that too under pressure. Due to his heroics, Pakistan won the match by 6 wickets and 5 balls to spare. Pakistan is still in contention after winning against South Africa and now New Zealand. They will face Bangladesh and Afghanistan in their last two world cup games.

Babar Azam was named the man of the match for his unbeaten world cup hundred.

New Zealand didn’t have a target that they would have defended easily. Their bowlers tried hard but they couldn’t succeed. Mitch Santner bowled well but he remained wicketless. The Pakistani batters did a smart thing. They didn’t give Santner any wickets. The Kiwis also missed an extra front line spinner.

Trent Boult also was ordinary in this match. He took only 1 wicket with Skipper Williamson and de Grandhomme picked up 1 wicket each to their name.
