Palio de Siena is the grand sports event that is held twice in a year, once in month of July and then later in August. It is the horse race where ten of the city’s seventeen contrade (districts) are represented by Horses and their Jockey. The Other seven that didn’t take part in July later contest in August with randomly selected three other participants. So if one misses to watch the event in July does have a chance to witness it in August.
The events are held to honour The Madonna of Provenzano and Virgin Mary. Duration of the event is 4 days where race is held only on forth day. The first day is generally for “Tratta” (assignment of the horses and drawing of lots).
On the day of the race whole city is full of uproar and about 40 to 50 thousand spectators are out on streets to witness the sight of the event.
Dates: 2nd July and 16th August.
Venue: Piazza del campo, Siena
