Pandit Shivkumar Sharma is a very famous and renowned “Santoor” player and Indian classical musician. He has played in many countries and has fans in almost all parts of the world.
Shivkumar Sharma was born on 13th January 1938 in Jammu to the singer Uma Dutt Sharma. His father started teaching him Vocals and Tabla at the tender age of 5. By the age of 13, his father introduced him to “Santoor”. It was his father’s dream that his son should be the first musician to play Indian Classical music on “Santoor”, which Pandit Shivkumar Sharma duly full-filled.
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma started giving public performances from 1955. His first solo album was recorded in 1960. His album “Call of the Valley” turned out to be one of the greatest hits in the history of Indian Classical Music industry. Music of this album reaches down to your soul and you feel as if you are actually in the serene valleys of Kashmir. After this, he created numerous other hit albums, some solo and some with other renowned Indian classical musicians. He also teamed up with flautist Hari Prasad Chaurasia and composed hit music for some very popular Bollywood films, such as Silsila, Faasle, Chandni, Lamhe, Darr and many more.
His achievements have been well appreciated in the form of numerous prestigious awards and recognitions which include Padma Shri, Padma Vibhushan, Platinum Disc, Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore USA and many more.
On the personal front, Shivkumar Sharma married a lovely lady called Manorama and is blessed with two sons. One of his sons, Rahul has also established himself as a great Santoor player. It’s a real treat to watch the father-son due perform together. Their performance in one of the HCL Concerts left us speechless.
