There are times when we travel alone; sometimes it’s because we can’t find a travelling buddy for a particular trip or we just want to travel all by ourselves. While travelling solo has some advantages and is fun, it can be risky sometimes. There are some basic precautions you should take to stay safe while travelling solo :
1. Not all deals are worth it

Don’t jump on the first deal or discount offer you get. Always book your tickets either through a trusted travel agent or directly from the airlines/railways website. Though it’s better to get it done through an agent as you may need any last last minute changes.

2. Self protection

Keep some small devices for self protection handy. Pepper spray, a pair of scissors or a cutter or a small knife always come handy in time of need. If you travel solo quite often, take a basic self-defense course.

3. Safe transport

If you have not been to a destination before, book your pickup from the airport or railway station through the hotel or your tour operator. This will ensure that you reach your first point in that town safely. Feel free to explore the city on your own later using public or private transport.

4. Don’t venture out late at night

No amount of information on the internet would be able to predict if a particular area is safe for you. Try to return to your place of stay before it’s dark. If at all you go out late evening, make sure to let someone know where you are going as also hire a cab through your hotel/tour operator. Don’t even think of looking for a cab or transport in the middle of the night.

5. Keep a backup

Always carry a visiting card/details of your place of stay. Ask your friends or relatives if they know any local person and get their contact details. This may come in handy in case of an emergency.

6. Don’t accept freebies

DO NOT TRUST STRANGERS even if they offer you a free ride or free food, drinks, entry to a night club/dance bar or free /cheap stay. Some bad elements are always on the lookout for easy preys. Don’t accompany them anywhere. Remember nothing comes free in this world.

7. Stay Alert and prepared

Whenever out, stay alert. Keep an eye to where you are going or walking. Keep a map handy for directions rather than depending on your phone. If you feel you have lost directions or feel unsafe, walk into the nearest restaurant or cafe or a shopping mall. Don’t ask strangers for directions.

8. Get tech smart
