Premier League gameweek 11 saw a change at the top of the table with heavy movers Chelsea moving up a place after defeating Crystal Palace at home 3-1. A result that was defined for Chelsea by Hazard’s and Kovacic’s introduction into the match at 1-1, saw the London giants score twice in the second quarter of the second half. They kept up the pace with Manchester City who put in another glistening performance to demolish Southampton 6-1 and maintain their pole position.
In our matchday 11 wrap up we first take a look at the showpiece event of the week. Liverpool traveled Arsenal, looking to establish their title credentials with a win against a top 6 side.
A match that saw Arsenal come out steaming for the first time in the first half of a premier league match saw Liverpool maintain their defensive shape to perfection to keep the hosts at bay. Coming into their groove, Liverpool took the advantage after James Milner found the back of the net with a fine strike to take his side to a 1-0 lead at the end of the first 45.
Looking to maintain his perfect record of Liverpool never losing when he has scored, Milner and company did all they could to keep Arsenal at bay for most of the second half. However, it was another goal-keeping blunder by Alisson that saw Lacazette round him to score the equaliser for Arsenal, a goal that hit Liverpool hard in the back, dropping them to the third position in the premier league table.
The week’s performance of the week was by far Manchester City’s with the defending champions at their attacking best. Suffering a beating was a dismal Southampton side who shipped six goals to bolster an already healthy Manchester City goal difference and take it to +29.
Another match that caught our eye this week was Wolverhampton entertaining Tottenham at home. Despite going down by three goals scored by Lamela, Moura and Kane, Wolverhampton’s fighting spirit saw them claw their way back into the match.
Unrelenting in their pressure, Wolverhampton continued attacking to win two penalties, both of which were comfortably converted by Neves and Jimenez. Unlucky to miss out on a goal in the first half due to a poor decision from the linesman that saw him wrongly flag a goal offside, the hosts finally ran out of time to take away something away from a match that once against stamps their status as much more than just a newly promoted side. With the win Tottenham entered the top 4, overtaking Arsenal at fourth place.
The bottom of the table saw no movement with Huddersfield, Cardiff and Fulham occupying the last three spots. A crucial encounter between two of the relegation battlers Huddersfield and Fulham was won by Huddersfield by a solitary Zhanka goal to give them their first win of the season and a vital one point lead over their opponents.
