Coming back to Premier League Gameweek 8 match highlights, with 8 matches in the premier league done and dusted, the table is slowly starting to take shape now. With Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all on 20 points, this year’s title challenge is looking to be a three-team battle. All three sides are unbeaten in the league and are only separated by goal difference at the end of gameweek 8.
Gameweek 8 was set to be a decisive one with title challengers Liverpool taking on defending champions Manchester City in a match that could define the rest of the premier league season for either side. Manchester City went into the match nursing their defeats to Liverpool of last season in which the champions were defeated by Jurgen Klopp’s side on three occasions.
When two of the most attacking-minded teams take on each other, goals are expected. And this is precisely what we had in mind when the match kicked off on Sunday in the game week’s last match of the day. However, expectations seldom come true. Expecting the same 7 goal thriller the two sides had provided us last season, we were let down massively with a 0-0 draw that saw both sides go into the match too afraid to lose, deciding to share the points on the day.
The match from Liverpool’s point of view was a disappointing one. Their fabled front 3 of Salah, Mane and Firmino seems to be a distant memory away now with the trio failing to turn up yet again this season. Despite starting well, pressing City aggressively to make them commit errors and disrupt their passing, Liverpool could never convert the chances that fell their way. Salah was the only one tying for them, with mane non-existent and Firmino dropping too deep.
Settling into the match, City started expressing themselves come the second half. Creating a couple of good moves to breach open Liverpool’s defence, City’s abysmal finishing haunted them on a day when the three points were up for grabs. A late opportunity to steer clear of Liverpool at the top of the table did fall City’s way through with Van Dijk fouling Mahrez inside the box to give away a penalty. Questionably enough Mahrez who boasts of a shambolic record when It comes to penalties stepped up and missed, skying a golden chance for City.
Making the most of this draw was Chelsea who was once again smooth and silky. Decapitating Southampton, Chelsea were at their efficient best, moving the ball around with pace and intent. A well-rounded performance by them saw them register a 3-0 win with goals from Hazard, Barkley and Morata that saw them move to second place in the table. The highlight of the match was a slick 31 pass sequence that leads to Morata’s goal, a true vision of Sarriball.
Arsenal who have been quietly impressing us with their recent attacking showings once again underlined the class of their front line with a performance that blew away Fulham. Linking up well to create beautiful football, Arsenal put five past a dismal Fulham side who are now in deep trouble. Spending 100m in the transfer window without reinforcing the defence is something that has left them weak at the back, a decision they’ll rue this season.
Meanwhile, it was the same story for Cardiff, Huddersfield and Newcastle who find themselves in a spot of bother. With 21% of the season behind us, all three sides are yet to win a match this season. Occupying the relegation spots, something needs to change and change quickly for them if they are to have a chance of surviving in the premier league this season.
