Liverpool vs Aston Villa (2-0)
Liverpool comfortably defeated Aston Villa 2-0 at home last night. They seemed rather relaxed in their first game at Anfield after being crowned the Premier League champions for the first time in 30 years. After a goalless first half, Liverpool scored two goals in the later 45 minutes of the game to comfortably move past 18th placed Aston Villa. Although the Reds enjoyed a terrific possession rate of 72 percent in the first half, they were unable to open the scoring without creating many chances. Aston Villa tried hard to score in the second half with efforts from Jack Grealish and Anwar El Ghazi to open the scoring for the visitors but in vain.
Sadio Mané’s 71st-minute goal helped the home team to open their scoring. Mane scored from a close distance from the goal with the help of a superb assist from Naby Keïta. Firmino missed the chance to double the home team’s lead when his attempt to score was saved by goalkeeper Pepe Reina. The second goal of the game when Curtis Jones’s 89th-minute left-footed shot hit the visitors’ goal following an assist from Mohamed Salah. The win increases Liverpool’s point difference at the top of the points table to 23 points while Aston Villa remains in the relegation zone after the loss.
