Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil Usha popularly known as P.T. Usha is India’s most famous track and field athlete.One of the greatest athletes India has ever produced, the queen of Indian track and field is the most decorated athlete in India’s history. Having won a plethora of awards at the biggest events in the world, Usha holds the world record for the most gold medals won by a woman at a single track meet after she won gold in the 100, 200, and 400 metre, 400m hurdles, and 4x400m relay in 1985 at the Asian Track and Field Meet at Jakarta, Indonesia. She currently runs her own school for athletics and track events and continues to be an inspiration to every woman athlete around the world.

 

  • Announced herself after setting a national record at the state athletic meet in Kottayam in 1977.

 

  • Became the youngest Indian sprinter to compete in the Olympics after she took part in the Moscow Olympics in 1980. She also became the first Indian woman athlete to reach the Olympics Final of an event.

 

  • She achieved her first international medal at a major sporting event in the 1982 Asiad Games where she won silver in the 100m and 200m events. Won 4 gold and 1 silver in the same competition in 1986.

 

  • A gold at the Asian Track And Field Championship in 1983 in the 400m event set the tone for her career which saw her win more than 101 awards at every track and field event in the world, making her Indians golden girl and best female athlete to ever exist.

 

  • Won the Addidas Golden Shoe for the best athlete in the 1986 Seoul Olympics. Was the greatest woman athlete in the world in 1985.

 

  • Is currently an officer in the Southern Railways apart from running a school for athletics for young girls.

  • Recipient of Arjuna Award, 1984 and Padma Sree in the same year.
  • Best Athlete in Asia Award in 1984,1985,1986,1987, and 1989.
  • World Trophy for best Athlete 1985, 1986
Best timings 100 meters (11.39 seconds), 200metres (23.25 sec), 400 meters (51.61 sec) and the 400 meters hurdles (55.42 sec).
