India’s bohemian lovers Raja and Radha Reddy are the world-renowned Kuchipudi dancing couple, who have given a new dimension to the age-old art of the Indian classical dance form Kuchipudi . They are one of the best classical dancers in India and have been awarded numerous times for their excellence and perfection in this dance form. Both of them are from Andhra Pradesh; Raja Reddy was born in 1944 in Narsapur and Radha Reddy in 1952 in Kotalgaon.
Popularly known as “the Reddy couple” Raja and Radha Reddy broke from melam tradition and danced together as a couple. Raja Reddy is an eminent Kuchipudi dancer and choreographer. He was drawn towards Kuchipudi since childhood and his talent was visible from a young age when he started doing stage shows. He was inspired by actress Vyjayanthimala. After marrying Radha, Raja motivated her to learn the same dance form under his guru Sri Vedantam Prahlada Sarma. Raja also married younger sister of Radha, Kaushalya and has two daughters Yamini and Bhavana, who are also established Kuchipudi dancers and perform in various national and international shows.
Their passion for Kuchipudi saw the couple establishing a dance institute named “Natya Tarangini Institute of Kuchipudi dance”. The institute regularly hosts various dance and music festivals, which attract artists not only from India but also international performers.
The couple creates magic on stage in blissful harmony to portray masculine strength and the feminine grace. Raja and Radha Reddy have been conferred with many awards for their unparalleled contribution in the field of classical dance. Some of the most prestigious are – Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan Award of Sahitya Kala Parishad, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Nrityachoodamani awards and Doctorates by the University of Hyderabad.
