Losing 7 wickets for just 19 runs in 22 balls, Rajasthan’s defeat was one of their own making. It was a shambolic slump by the home side who managed to dig themselves into a massive hole, losing a match from a situation from which there was no return for Punjab. With the defeat, the Rajasthan Royals were also condemned to their first ever defeat against Punjab in their home stadium.

For Rajasthan who found themselves chasing a healthy 184 after Gayle had made 79 earlier in the day for Punjab to propel their total, the chase couldn’t have started off more perfectly than it did. Rahane (27) and Butler at the top of the order gave the hosts just the start they needed, putting on a 78 run partnership in double quick time as Punjab’s paper thin bowling unit of just 5 frontline bowlers failed to contain the openers.

An incident which has been revived with huge distaste all over the world, saw Ashwin get Butler out using the mankade mode of dismisal. The spinner in a cringeworthy move, deliberately pulled well out of his action, waiting for Butler(69) to step out of the non-striker’s crease before knocking the wickets out, a decision which in a surprising move was given out by the third umpire.
