Punjab just can’t seem to shake off the stronghold grip that RCB have caught them in ever since last season. And for their resurgent form, RCB have no one to thank but the meticulous AB de Villiers. After losing Virat Kohli early on as he feels to Shami yet again, it was AB de Villiers who yet again bore the brunt of the responsibility for his franchisee. With Parthiv (43) walking back to a soft dismissal off Ashwin and wickets falling like a house of cards from there on to see RCB lose 4 wickets in 46 runs, it looked like things would all but fall apart for them.
However, a 121-run stand between AB de Villiers (82) and Marcus Stoinis (46) was just what RCB needed. From a situation of no return, the match turned on its head in what was an incredible turnaround in the match. Everything right done by Punjab up to that stage was torn apart with pure, clean and hard hitting from the two seeing 80 runs come in the final 5 overs, 27 off those in Vilojen’s culminating over itself, in what was a testament to awe-inducing batting.

Knowing that this wicket was going to continue to play freely, RCB were fully aware that even 200 could be an easy target to peel off if they allowed Punjab to get into their groove. And despite getting Gayle out early on for just the 23 runs, the 59-run stand for the first wicket between Mayank (35) and Rahul (42) always kept Punjab at par with the required run rate.
It was with the introduction of spin that the match started coming back RCB’s way. Chahal and Moeen struck quickly to get rid of both the set batsmen and despite a late-inning by Pooran (46), wickets at regular intervals meant Punjab were also way behind the asking rate at all times.
