Ritu Kumar has today established herself as not only one of India’s foremost designers but also one of the most famous designers in the world. She has developed a unique style, reflecting ancient traditions of Indian craftsmanship in a contemporary and new way. With a background in art and history, Ritu created a new niche using her knowledge of ancient design paired with the innovative use of traditional crafts. She is credited with world-renowned boutique brands ‘Ritu Kumar’ and ‘Ri’ along with ‘Label Ritu Kumar’.
Ritu Kumar’s success story is an inspiring one. She was born on 11th November 1944 in Amritsar, Punjab and graduated from Lady Irwin College in 1964 after which she did her higher education from Briarcliff College, NY, USA in 1966.
Her contribution to the fashion fraternity both nationally and internationally has been immense. With more than 50 years of work, the designer excels in both traditional and western outfits. She is referred to as the ethnic queen with ethnic attires being her specialty. She started the boutique culture in India under the name “Ritu”. The designer not only restrained her work to the fashion industry, but also dived into other sectors offering luxury. Her brand ‘LABEL’ caters to the modern woman focusing on the cut, color, drape and feel of the garment. Today she boasts of twelve outlets in India, which offer a range of products, from conventional contemporary.
Ritu Kumar clientele list include Bollywood celebrities like Dia Mirza, Soha Ali Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Lara Dutta, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Neha Dhupia, Vidya Balan and international celebrities like Anoushka Shankar, Melanie Brown, Lady Victoria Hervey.
Recipient of the Padma Shri Award in 2013, Ritu Kumar was honoured by the National Institute of Fashion Technology in 1998, with Lifetime Achievement Award along the Outstanding Women Entrepreneur Award, by the PHD – Chamber of Commerce.
